![]() However, for all of frontman Bernard Sumner’s emotive sincerity, New Order wasn’t deploying the same kind of conceptual dramatics that Seagulls were attempting. While Mike Score has said that their sound was “somewhere between Pink Floyd and punk Floyd,” their closest spiritual cousin was probably New Order, who came together in 1980 from the ashes of Joy Division. On the other end of the spectrum, Reynolds’s playing separated them from acts like Depeche Mode, who didn’t use guitars at all. Duran Duran had both guitars and keys, but frequently featured Andy Taylor’s fret work in a more traditional rock context. Their sound combined Mike’s up-front keyboards and Reynolds’s guitar textures in a way that stood out from their contemporaries. Mike attributed the group’s unusual name to two sources of inspiration one was the 1970’s bestseller Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach, and the other was the lyric “A flock of seagulls!” from the 1978 song “Toiler on the Sea” by British punk royalty The Stranglers.ĭespite the punk inspiration, A Flock of Seagulls took aim at a different musical direction. However, this premium-priced tablet is still hamstrung by the same Fire OS that powers the cheaper models. The screen is bright and sharp enough, the speakers aren't bad, and the cameras are 1080p and nicer than the cameras on the rest of the Fire tablets. That said, if all you plan to do is consume Amazon content, and the price doesn't bother you, the Fire Max 11 is a good way to do it. To get rid of that, you'll need to spend $15 more for the version without “special offers.” Whichever you choose, Amazon will serve up advertisements on the lock screen. You can choose between 32-GB or 64-GB models (with a microSD slot on both so you can add up to 1 TB of storage down the road if you need more space). After that, you can set your HD 10 on a stand (if you opt for the Plus model, we like the official wireless charging stand) and it essentially becomes an Echo Show. To use Alexa's Show Mode, swipe down on the notification overlay and check the Show Mode box. And, as with the Fire HD 8, you can shout commands at Alexa from across the room. The Fire HD 10 has a larger screen with more pixels (1080p) than its siblings, making it better for watching videos. None of Google's office apps work on the Fire HD 10, not even in the browser. Working on the Fire HD 10 isn't bad, so long as you don't need Google apps. And Amazon is hoping you'll do more, as there's a “ productivity bundle” that includes an excellent keyboard (no trackpad though) and a one-year subscription to Microsoft 365. Alongside it, there's a Fire HD 10 Plus, which bumps the RAM to 4 GB and adds wireless charging, which is worth the extra $30 if you plan to do more than watch movies and browse the web. Kidman manages all of this with the kind of very arch humor that marks so many of her great performances to follow the conspiratorial wink between her and the audience adds a spark of comedy and life to even her most serious or frightening performances.
